As the new owner of this thriving but dated 25-year-old high-rise retirement community, Five Star Quality Care embarked upon an ambitious program of interior and exterior renovations. The facility is home to over three hundred seniors, with 187 independent living apartments, 50 assisted living units, and 60 skilled nursing beds. Of the 27,500 sf of ground floor space dedicated to resident amenities, dining facilities, administrative offices, and other common areas, many areas were sorely under utilized, and did not adequately accommodate current resident services and activities.
JSA was retained to provide architectural and interior design services toward this end, and promptly developed a plan for reallocating much of the “anonymous” common space into a sequence of inviting and appropriately scaled interconnected activity zones. Among these are an entry lobby, a game room, a library/living room with a large double-sided fireplace as focal point, and a lively bistro. The dining room was reworked to provide a true fine-dining ambience, with a generous and comfortable before and after-dinner gathering space. The cramped administrative and marketing suite was relocated and more carefully tailored to suit present-day operations. In the process, all areas were configured to maximize universal accessibility.
