The New Hampshire central psychiatric facility’s 186,000 square feet provides inpatient pediatric psychiatric services. It is also the base for the Dartmouth Medical School’s psychiatric residency training program. Within the 144 beds this replacement hospital provides is a 40-bed unit for the treatment of residents with acute mental illness, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The building’s overall design stresses diagnosis, treatment and security within a “normalized” residential environment. A major focus of the interior space is a 10,000 square foot pedestrian mall which includes a cafe, bookstore, greenhouse, barber shop, restaurant and convenience store. Diagnostic areas, therapy centers and a maximum security residential unit extend from the central mall to the perimeter of the building.
