The Geriatric Psychiatric Unit is a 10 bed addition to an already existing unit within the hospital. The program is geriatric specific (patients aged 65 and older) and provides acute care to those patients suffering from depression, anxiety, dementia, behavioral issues, psychosis, bipolar disorder, etc. The patient population ranges from those patients who are independent and do not require a great deal of assistance with activities of daily living, to those requiring complete care by the qualified nursing staff. All admitted patients are at higher risk of falls due to the increased levels of confusion that accompany the diagnosis of dementia, increasing comorbidities, and the effects of medications. The average length of stay for the patients admitted to the GPU program is 7-10 days.
